Reducing our Impact on the Environment
At FIRST Security, health, safety, sustainability, and operational responsibility all go hand in hand. Every day, our teams travel thousands of kilometres to support clients and communities across Aotearoa - and the way we drive directly impacts safety, emissions, and operational costs.
With current fuel supply pressures affecting parts of New Zealand, there is also a timely reminder: being efficient with fuel isn’t just good for the environment - it’s also about being responsible with resources and supporting cost-effective service delivery for our clients.
By driving safely and efficiently, we reduce unnecessary fuel use, help control operational costs, and continue delivering value without compromising safety or service quality.
Safer, Smarter Driving Tips
- Smooth acceleration and braking - avoid harsh braking and accelerate gradually.
- Follow the 2-4 second rule - increase following distances, especially in poor weather.
- Stick to safe speeds - higher speeds increase fuel consumption and risk.
- Use Eco Mode where available - helps reduce fuel use and vehicle wear.
- Plan ahead and drive defensively - safer driving is more efficient driving.
Reducing vehicle idle time
With our fleet travelling approximately 11 million kilometres annually, even small improvements in idling behaviour can have a significant impact. Since the fuel crisis began, we have been actively monitoring over-idling across the fleet and sending drivers feedback every three days to help build awareness and encourage more efficient driving habits.
Please remember:
- Vehicles should never be left idling unnecessarily.
- Unattended idling creates avoidable fuel waste, emissions, and security risks.
- Keeping vehicles warm is not a valid reason for extended idling.
Why this matters right now
In the current environment, reducing unnecessary fuel use is not only an environmental responsibility - it also supports operational resilience and ensures we are being as economical and efficient as possible for our clients.
Every small action contributes to safer roads, lower emissions, and more responsible use of resources. Thank you for doing your part.
